Chamber of Fear to Terracotta Warrior: The History of Nike LeBron “China” Editions

lebron china sneakers Chamber of Fear to Terracotta Warrior: The History of Nike LeBron China Editions

LeBron James emerged as a phenom in Akron as a nationally-recognized player for St. Vincent – St. Mary. He became a superstar in Cleveland, winning MVPs and Gold Medals with the Cavaliers. In Miami, he became a Champion, leading the Heat to two straight. LeBron James’ rise to legend-status can be tracked by specific regions, but here in the U.S., we often forget LeBron’s meteoric rise to fame in China, where the basketball crazed country has made the world’s best ballers like Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant into god-like beings. LeBron James definitely belongs in that club, and over the last decade, Nike has taken a concerted effort in bringing a special treat to a country boasting the largest population in the world.

Nike LeBron Black Collection Display at Nike WHQ

nike lebron black collection display whq Nike LeBron Black Collection Display at Nike WHQ

LeBron James spent some time on August 13th traversing the Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton, OR by foot and by bicycle, making some pit-stops at a LeBron sand sculpture (yes, the Portland area has sand) and an interesting display inside the WHQ walls. Ten years of Nike LeBron greatness were up for viewing, with each of LBJ’s signature models individually encased along a straight line makeshifting a metaphorical road to the Nike LeBron 11. The entire set was in an all-black format – some of which we’ve seen before, some not at all, but all amazing. With two NBA Titles, two Olympic Gold Medals, four NBA MVPs, and a Dunk Contest Trophy already under the man’s belt, it seems timely for Nike to embark on a LeBron retrospective of some sort, and we can most certainly expect a story-line with the debut of the LeBron 11.

Like it or not, this interesting display brings us back yet again to the topic of the Nike LeBron Retro. If you compare the trajectory of the Air Jordan and the Nike LeBron, you’d realize that the two could not be more different. Air Jordans made their Retro debut in 1994 when MJ was thought to be done with the game, while LeBron James has shown zero signs of desire to hang ‘em up earlier than usual. More importantly, the Air Jordan line was all about sleek and stylish design opposed to the Nike LeBron, which is revered for its robust innovative upgrades like Dynamic Flywire, Hyperfuse, full-length Zoom and much, much more. ┬áSo while it would be nice for Nike to celebrate ten years of LeBron in some way, is a bringback of the early models – namely the Air Zoom Generation that LeBron himself wore just a few days ago – the way to do it? There’s more to come for sure, so check out the video that LeBron James himself took for his IG followers and let us know what your expectations are for a LeBron Retro movement.

While the Jordan Brand athletes head out to China and Kobe enjoys some downtime in Europe, LeBron James and Nike has decided to hit up the Philippines for a special “Witness History” Tour, which features some cool in-store events as well as some live demos of the King on a basketball court. His time out there has already resulted in a couple of killer sneaker exhibits, including that set of incredible customs and this, a collection of player exclusives and rare pairs from King James’ career (definitely some gems in here, most of which can be seen in Justin Amazing’s collection). Starting all the way back at the Nike Air Zoom Generation, the display includes hard to track down fare like the Nike Zoom LeBron IV “Fruity Pebbles”, the “Denim” Nike LeBron 8, and the not-quite-player-exclusive Nike LeBron X “MVP”. See the sneakers after the jump and let us know if you own any of these rare LeBrons, and stay tuned for more recaps from Nike and Jordan Brand’s plans overseas.

What Do You Think?: Nike LeBron Retro

March 21st, 2013 by | 65 comments

nike lebron retro what do you think summary What Do You Think?: Nike LeBron Retro

Earlier today LeBron James went “Retro” for the first time in a while and brought out the Nike Zoom LeBron VI “Fairfax” for his return to Cleveland. The Ken Link-designed Nike Zoom LeBron VI was the last of the LeBrons before it moved onto the era of Jason Petrie – a move that made LeBrons much more popular by a noticeable degree and solidifed the Nike LeBron as the flagship name and model for Nike Basketball. With consumers chasing down LeBron releases at a faster rate than ever before and the recent unveiling of the Nike LeBron X Elite bringing in even more excitement to the LBJ label, we’d like to continue our “What Do You Think?” series by posing the thought of a Nike LeBron Retro. Is the timing perfect? Is it too early?

Classics Revisited: Nike Zoom LeBron V “Yankees” (2008)

yankees nike lebron v march 2008 release Classics Revisited: Nike Zoom LeBron V Yankees (2008)

NIKE LEBRON WEEK

By now you might’ve noticed that we went from LeBron 1 to LeBron V for our week-long Classics Revisited on the Nike LeBron. One of the more under-appreciated signature models is indeed the V, the tech-boosted high-performance model that released in October of 2007. In March of 2008, Nike Basketball released a limited-edition run of the LeBron V ‘Yankees’, celebrating the Yankees new season at a special release at the House of Hoops (you know, back when HoH had exclusive releases). It features the Bronx Bombers’ signature pinstripe detailing on the upper with a crisp white/navy colorway and a baseball-diamond logo on the tongue. LeBron considers the Yankees his favorite baseball team, stirring up some inadvertent controversy in 2007 when he wore a Yankees baseball cap during a Yankees/Indians game – in Cleveland. That Yankees allegiance was later thought to be an indication that LeBron would select the New York Knicks as his new employers, but we know that didn’t unfold that way! Just 86 pairs of the LeBron V ‘Yankees’ was released and is one of the most limited-edition released LeBrons to date.
