VANS AUTHENTIC The Vans Authentic is the first sneaker ever released by skate shoe company Vans. The sneakers made their debut in 1966 featuring a canvas upper and the signature rubber outsole for grip purposes. The Vans Authentic survives to this day as a frequently re-released sneaker in the Vans catalog.

Vans has worked quite a bit with the ‘Aged Leather’ motif in recent months. The successes are reflected in pairs you see your friends wearing as well as further releases, and today we have the third set featuring this title in the past few months. The Vans Old Skool and Authentic both show up in rich brown tones with uneven graininess that enriches the simple palette, the latter adding brass eyelets to add a layer of ‘classy’ to the classic vibes on these aged skate lowtops. The Authentic is the cornerstone of Vans’ footwear catalog, and in this latest release, the original 1966 deck shoe gets treated to an easy-on heel strap. Syndicate has issued Vans Authentic 69 Pro pairs before (most notably in collaboration with WTAPS), but earlier drops didn’t prepare us for the standout feature at the rear of these pairs. Black, red and blue pairs make up for this unfamiliar approach with a tonal application of the iconic checkerboard pattern, so have a closer look below and grab yours at shops like Atlas.

What started in March 2011 as a heartwarming piece of Sneaker News has become an annual tradition as Vans readies for the 2013 Custom Culture contest. The winning school of this competition whose registration ends February 11th will earn the same prize that Rio Rancho High School won last year: a $50,000 grand prize and retail distribution on their winning designs. The New Mexico school won by adding local inspiration to their designs, and you can see the Rio Rancho x Vans Sk8-Hi, Authentic, Slip-On and 106 Vulc slated for a March release after the jump below.

Vans Skate has partnered up with NYC artist Curtis Kulig for this special capsule of heritage footwear inspired by Kulig’s iconic LOVE ME graffiti artwork. Included in this set is the Authentic, the Slip-On, and a ladies-specific Sk8-Hi Slim – each designed with a unique take on the classic printwork. To celebrate the February 1st launch of the Love Me collection, Vans will host an event with Kulig in-house at Space15Twenty Urban Outfitters in LA (2/1) and at the Vans DQM General Store in NYC (2/14), which you can RSVP for here!

Vans continues its push into the Year of the Snake with two new renditions of the brand’s original silhouette. The Vans Authentic is the next canvas upon which scales have been applied, silver and gold editions closer to a real reptile than some of the more colorful examples we’ve seen approaching the YOTS. The Vans California Collection keeps going strong with fresh takes on established Off the Wall silhouettes. Coming up for the third quarter of 2013 are a number of noteworthy releases, including their original Vans Authentic in checkerboard and ‘watercolor’ prints. Joining them are camo Slip-Ons, leopard Chukkas, polka dot Eras, native print Switchbacks and a shirt teasing what could end up as the answer to 2012′s Half Cab 20 celebration in the Mountain Edition’s 30th anniversary.
