New Balance’s numbering system was designed to provide an instant reference to a shoe’s relative capabilities, but here’s a case where the straightforward system gets a bit confusing. NB teased a 30th anniversary edition of their classic 990 back at the start of the summer, but even earlier, we’d seen the above pictured silhouette carrying that same number. The ‘new’ New Balance 990 is closer to the 991, but features big ‘N’ styling blended into the techier upper design. Black 990 Version 3s come from the Vintage Collection with that distinctive heel script, and you can see how they compare to earlier releases in more photos below. Available on Bridge Footwear.
