Afew has gotta be one of the best in the game as far as shops cranking out gear that pays homage to your favorite sneaker releases. Coming long after their Nike Sportswear “Legends” tote, the shop has this time come together with Kwills to whip up a tee paying homage to some of the greatest Asics Gel Lyte III colorways of all time. The shirt will be up for grabs at their 2013 Japan Day celebration there in Dussledorf on May 24th, an event accompanied by a BBQ, a showcase of their Top 50 Asics Gel release, and a display of vintage Asics heat. Action Bronson went on record last week as saying he’s worked his way through all the other hot product and his love for New Balance reigns supreme. Whether it’s a timing thing or the up and coming Queen emcee is just hinting at his love of suede and mesh runners, Bronsolini is pictured in his latest music video wearing Ronnie Fieg’s ‘ECP’ Asics Gel Lyte IIIs. Borrowing on a style originated by a model named for a Mexican chili pepper, this new release from Onitsuka Tiger takes its name from Brazil’s most famous peak. The Onitsuka Tiger Corcovado lends modern tech to the classic silhouette, its moniker connecting with further beauty by way of Rio de Janiero’s landmark Cristo Redentor statue. We haven’t seen any collaborators reach back into Asics’ pre-Gel era runners, but lucklily there are more new in-house styles on the horizon. The Onitsuka Tiger Colorado ’85 takes us back almost three decades with its sleek upper and dual-density midsole, but this new charcoal and pink colorway is the kind of thing that’s become more fashionable in today’s age. Asics continues to expand its heritage offerings with another classic basketball shoe set to arrive for the third quarter. The Onitsuka Tiger Grandest is your garden variety cupsoled hightop blucher, a style that falls in line with contemporaries from other brands like the Nike Blazer, Converse Pro Leather and adidas Nizza. That means they’re also similar to the more prolific Fabre hightop, and something like an un-capped take on the Coolidge. It’s always refreshing to see the custom scene to reach out beyond the standard Swoosh stuff when whipping up one-off sneakers. Case in point is this new pair from El Cappy, which pours a bunch of extra details onto an Asics Gel Lyte III release from a couple years back. The job was commissioned by Detroit rapper Phil Swish, who sought out El Cappy to create a sneaker thematically similar to his upcoming debut album Black Wool.
