Columbus, Ohio’s Sole Classics gave us a good look at their Vans Vault Era “Carmen” with a video preview last week. Today we see a yarn spun that brings together the Buckeye State’s passion for football, their 1996 license plate design and a mysterious high school legend. The symbolism is deep here, including everything from the pebbled football leather heel tab to the removed Wikipedia entry for Jack ‘Ice’ Henderson. Sole Classics takes a simple classic and lovingly applies layers of detail in tribute to its home state, where these will be released this Saturday, May 25th with an online drop to follow that evening.

Interesting timing to see a new Nike Air Pippen 1 colorway make its first appearance on the date of the 2013 NBA Draft Lottery. The last time we saw Scottie Pippen’s first signature Nike Basketball shoe was last June, when its jewel-waved upper was treated to a Supersonics/ping-pong ball makeup. This latest revelation has nothing to do with tonight’s telecast, and a non-basketball theme makes for one of the more satisfying designs this model has seen. The Air Pippen goes with camouflage on the sides of a black nubuck design that adds an exclamation point with vibrant green branding and sole. Just as was the case with the ‘Suns’ makeups, the Air Jordan 1 Retro ’93 will precede the ‘Playoffs’ Jordan VIII Retro by two weeks. Coming up with a June 1st drop date, these 8-ified AJ1s incorporate the heel ribs and colorway including multicolor liner and chenille tongue logo in tribute to the shoe in which Michael Jordan captured his third NBA Championship. The Nike Kobe 8 continues to prove itself a late bloomer, with a gang of killer colorways still in the works despite Kobe having long since stopped playing for the season. The most straightforward basketball style amongst them is this, the Engineered Mesh utilizing Nike Kobe 8 “Venice Beach”. That unofficial nickname is one presumably referencing the colorful graffiti of that locale, a set that’s done justice by the streaky upper of this sneaker. You had to assume a “Heat” colorway was coming sooner or later for the Nike LeBron XI. Sure enough, the next colorway that we’ve spotted is this, which dons red for the Armorposite plating and black for the rest of the upper. The past couple pillars of the LeBron line have had a little spot on the sneaker reserved for telling the story of the particular colorway, a detail we’ve yet to see emerge on the Nike LeBron XI. Stay tuned as more design details are revealed that might further solidified the “Heat” connection and tell us if you’re feeling this Nike LeBron XI in the comments.

Back at the start of the 2013 NBA Playoffs, Jordan Brand unveiled a collection of PEs including new Jordan Super.Fly 2 colorways for Blake Griffin. The black ‘away’ edition is quite similar to a style set to release in the third quarter, the key differences being Griffin’s exclusives had a white sole whereas these go black on bottom. They’re paired with a Miami Heat edition for the release scheduled not too far after the potential back-to-back championship celebration. Animal print suede is a recent development that’s given the recent wild pattern trend a boost in the footwear department. The latest examples come from the German Cat, as the Puma Suede and Stepper take on three leopard-accented colorways each. The Suedes are mostly leopard with solid Formstripes, while the Steppers roughly invert this distribution, with the rosettes applied to just the ankle collar.
