saint laurent jordan 1 A History of Luxury Sneaker Copycats

Yesterday, news broke that New Balance is suing Karl Lagerfeld over a sneaker being sold by the German fashion designer that features an awfully NB-looking shape, complete with an “K” across the side in place of the usual “N”. That sort of appropriation is nothing new in terms of luxury brands though, and there are plenty of other pairs on the market that owe varying degrees of their DNA to more pedestrian sneaker designs. Legal activity in this realm isn’t an entirely new thing either – Jordan Brand previously chased down Gourmet for their tributes and even New Balance had previous a win in this category following their settlement with Louis Vuitton over a 574 ripoff from 2009.

Earlier last month New Balance revealed that it would be releasing its New Balance 501 in a number of new camouflage styles, six to be exact, all of which strayed away from that woodland theme that’s become so ubiquitous over the past couple of years in lieu of a digital camo look (sounds familiar after that Air Jordan 1 “Digi-Camo” sample, right?) Today we get a look at perhaps the most traditional hue that features an olive green suede while a grey base is aided by tan and green and vibrant hunting orange hits the branding and back heel. What do you think of the latest pair? Continue reading after the click for a better look at this New Balance 501 and grab your size today via WishATL.

Three colorways for men and women for a half-dozen total will hit New Balance retailers starting next month, with an inviting $67.95 price-point set for retail. The ‘Camo’ 574s have garnered the strongest positive feedback of the three major sets for that model this year, but it’s another New Balance suede and mesh makeup that we’re profiling here today.  The New Balance 501 joins two 574s to make up this camouflaged trio, with this pair being the most ‘concealed’ of the three.  Camouflage on the upper leaves room for the traditional white/black sole setup; how do these 501s compare to their 574 counterparts?  Let us know after you’ve seen more below and find yours available at NB retailers like Rock City Kicks.

Arriving later this year is a quartet of New Balance 501 releases – a real treat for retro-runner hounds who are looking for some season-specific colorways this Fall. What you can expect: Four colorways in tonal-package treatments, built with contrasting materials in suede (on the toe and heel) and ballistic nylon, set above white midsoles and gum outsoles. Expect these at New Balance accounts later this year, but don’t expect them to sit around for long. More images below, so take a look and let us know what you think. Photos: The Distinct Life
