Of the myriad models within the New Balance canon to get the collab treatment this year, the New Balance 998 was the single one that did so to probably the least amount of fanfare. The pair quietly joined the ranks of the J.Crew x New Balance set, and was on its way to making quite a few more waves with this Sneaker Freaker curated pair until said projected was scrapped. We think the inline pairs can do the heavy lifting though, with this New Balance 998 in grey/blue/red offering up an almost-patriotic look to go with its made in USA status. Collaborations with J.Crew and Sneaker Freaker have given the New Balance 998 some added attention in recent months, but it’s not like you’ve gotta have a guest designer tied to its time-tested lines to result in a winner. Check out this new edition in hunter green suede, a classic NB rendition that gives us another earthy neutral for the cold part of the year without appealing to the grey and/or navy standbys. These were originally expected as a fall release but have slipped with us into the fourth quarter, so have a closer look below and be on the lookout as they’ll arrive at retailers like Las Vegas’ Feature shortly.

The genre of sneaker collaborations has expanded considerably over the last few years, but only a select few are capable of really putting a riveting plotline behind a shoe. CNCPTS in New England, Extra Butter in Long Island, NY, and the legendary Sneaker Freaker are just some of the exclusive group of creative minds who go beyond the banality of “let’s pick out some nice colors” and delve into story-telling mode – and Sneaker Freaker’s latest footwear collaboration doesn’t disappoint. They start things off by stating that there is no true ‘theme’ for this shoe, but somehow they manage to convey a message - even without intent.
This first look at the Sneaker Freaker x New Balance 998 ‘Tassie Devil’ proves that notion once again, as the colorway is a half-tribute to Solebox’ amazing New Balance ’1500′ Devil collab, but at the heart is inspired driven by a cause close to the hearts of Australian natives; the Tasmanian Devil is synonymous to the region Down Under, but en epidemic has afflicted the native marsupials to the point of near extinction. A healthy chunk of the profits from the Sneaker Freaker ‘Tassie Devil’ will go toward a charity to support – and save – these wild animals. A detailed gallery is just ahead, so take a look and we’ll keep you updated on release information.

The ongoing partnership between J.Crew and New Balance just got a bit deeper, with the team up now taking place on the New Balance 998 as well. Previous iterations of the collaboration have landed on models a bit less techy looking like the New Balance 1400, with this particular go-round offering up the possibility of a bit more busy blocking. The J.Crew team has taken hold of that opportunity with both debut pairs, one matching up a military suede with some burning orane and blue sections and the other, a bit more unified, mixing in red to a heavy navy base. Click through with us to check out the all new Made in USA J.Crew x New Balance 998 pairs and head over to J.Crew’s webshop now to purchase.

What a difference a tiny detail makes, especially when it comes to New Balance. Fans of the no-nonsense running kings have noted for years that while the numbering scheme follows a fairly logical sequence, the company might be better off with more brandable names than what might to some seem as complicated as binary code. Take for instance this ‘Made in USA’ New Balance 998 slated for early 2013: a model that bears a striking resemblance to a recent 997 release while also varying from the M998GNR OG colorup by just a few degrees. Sneakerheads drawn to that kind of subtlety will be pleased that more variations on the timeless styles are coming up for the future, so have a closer look after the jump and stick with Sneaker News for release info on all these Bread and Butter Berlin previews. via EUKicks

It was a little over a year ago that New Balance combined grey suede with oak brown accents and just a hint of red on a superbly executed ‘Made in USA’ 998. Were you to have switched the brown for black and allowed more red to push things in a more aggressive direction, you’d end up with something similar to this upcoming New Balance M998GR, another US-made classic with that timeless NB appeal. These were the pick of the 998 litter in fall/winter previews earlier this year; will we see any more colorways before the ’13s start rolling in? Stick with Sneaker News to find out, and in the meantime, have a closer look at this new pair for July and pre-order yours today from End.

Right now is a great time to be a fan of New Balance’s time-tested classic formula and three top-notch new drops from their Made in USA collection just released here in the States. We’ll start with the above pictured New Balance M996, a pair that’s dropped in a staggered release with the earlier stores already selling out. Its closest kin is another grey suede 900 series, this time the M998 in the classic 1993 OG look that gets reissued every few years. Breaking the mold and crossing the finish line is the venerable M576CD, a cordovan leather design whose precise name befits the quality of its build. Check out all three after the jump then get with West for yours.
