In March of last year, the Kobe Bryant estate and Nike, Inc. officially renewed its partnership after a short hiatus. Months later, Nike officially released the Kobe 6 “Mambacita”, a tribute to both the Black Mamba and his daughter Gigi, on May 1st — the day of Gigi’s Sweet 16 birthday.
Since then, Nike Kobe releases have been very few and far in between. The Kobe 4 Protro “Mambacita” has been the only Nike Kobe shoe to release since, with the Kobe 8 Protro set to make its debut later this year. However, it seems that there are larger plans in the works, based on Nike CEO John Donahoe.
Based on the Q4FY23 earnings call, a “Kobe Brand” relaunch is scheduled ahead of Kobe Day, which falls annually on August 24th. What this entails is not entirely clear, but we surmise the return of Kobe apparel and accessories as well as confirmed releases of Kobe footwear. Portions of the proceeds are likely dedicated to the Mamba & Mambacita Sports Foundation.
We’re not even two months away from Kobe Day 2023, so expect official announcements soon.
Excerpt from Nike Q4FY23 Earnings Call:
“And it’s going to be an exciting summer as we set the stage to relaunch the Kobe Brand in advance of Kobe Day on 8/24.”
