It’s pretty evident that the legacy of ASICS as a brand will be best remembered for their contributions to the running shoe category, but there was once a time when they were a well-respected name in the basketball world as well. In fact, that’s where the company got its start back in 1949 when founder, Kihachiro Onitsuka, began manufacturing basketball sneakers out of his living room. Since then, the brand has branched out and excelled in a number of different sports and footwear categories, but basketball will always remain an important part of their history.

When it comes to sports, perfection is an elusive prize, and whether you achieve it or not, it’s that undying pursuit of perfection that drives players to become truly great. You can make the argument that Kobe Bryant has come as close to mastering the game of basketball as anyone who’s ever played it. Years of hard work, determination, and intense focus have resulted in a legendary on-court run highlighted by five NBA Championships, two Olympic gold medals, and league MVP honors, and despite all that success, Kobe is still as hungry as ever. Although injuries have derailed the better part of the last two seasons, knowing how hard he’s ready and willing to push himself towards greatness, you can never count Kobe out.

The New York Knicks have had their fair share of stars and beloved hometown favorites through the years with names like Willis Reed, Walt Frazier, and Earl Monroe still as revered as ever in the Big Apple, but if you had to choose one player to anoint as the saint of NYC basketball, it’s hard to make a case against Patrick Ewing. In addition to being the all-time franchise leader in almost every statistical category you can think of, Patrick also led the Knicks to 13 consecutive postseason appearances, and although his tenure in the middle of the Madison Square Garden paint never yielded an NBA championship for the city, his hard work and determination carved a legacy that will never be forgotten.

When most people think of action sports as they pertain to the sneakerhead world, it will most likely be skateboarding that first comes to mind, and rightfully so. The mid 2000s SB Dunk craze helped to popularize skateboarding shoes with skaters and non-skaters alike, and in turn, helped other elements of the culture to spill out into the mainstream and become a big money business. Roughly a decade later, skate style has worked its way into the very core of streetwear and hip-hop fashion in a seamless way where the pre-conceived lines that dictate who can wear what have become completely blurred.

At its core, Jordan Brand has and always will be deeply rooted in the game of basketball, but that hasn’t stopped them from expanding into a number of different sports and other categories to help expand the Jumpman empire. Not long after Jordan Brand branched out as an independent offshoot of Nike in 1997, they quickly began to bolster their team roster with superstars from a wide variety of sports. In the early days, it was marquee names like Roy Jones, Randy Moss, and Derek Jeter that helped place the Jumpman logo in all kinds of new spotlights, fittingly aligned with the cream of the crop in each respective sport.

The ever-changing sneaker landscape is full of ebbs and flows, and while styles and even brands rise and fall in popularity, there will always be those individuals out there who never waver from what they love regardless of what everybody else is doing. Here in the U.S., we’ve seen a big spike in the popularity of classic New Balance runners in recent years. Love for the brand’s retro archive has been going strong for a long time in Asia and Europe, but it’s taken a little longer for the fever to catch on to the same degree in the Stateside sneakerhead community.

In a weekend that saw the surprise quickstrike release of the “Red October” Yeezy 2, it seemed like the hottest topic in the sneaker world on Monday was still the high-top return of the revered Diamond Supply Co. “Tiffany” Dunks. In a lot of ways, this past weekend’s release of the Diamond Dunk High was like a nostalgic trip back to 2005. Not only did it effectively recapture the design magic of the original Low edition, but the mayhem around the retail launch also catapulted the SB Dunk back into the spotlight in a way that it has seldom seen in recent years.
