Eric Koston’s long-time hobby of golf was the focus of his latest signature shoe – the Nike Eric Koston 2. Sneaker News sat down with Eric and designer Shawn Carboy and talked about the unusual union of skate and golf, and spent a few moments discussing that sick red PE-style shoe that Tiger actually autographed for Eric. Those sick red golf shoes, called the Nike Koston 2 Spike, was dubbed “Tiger Sunday Red”, a nod to those bright red polos he wears on Sunday matches, but unfortunately, the Nike Koston 2 Spike in this daring color isn’t available in stores just yet. As you can see, the Nike Koston 2 Spike shares the same upper design as the Nike Koston 2 skate shoe, but with tonal red embossed snakeskin print above a golf-ready spike foundation. The Nike Koston 2 IT is available now, so stay tuned to Sneaker News for updates on this Koston x Woods golf shoe.

Part of the Nike Skateboarding Eric Koston 2 Media Launch Experience included an extended sit-down with the man of the hour, Eric Koston, and the designer behind the sequel, Shawn Carboy. Both were ready and waiting to fill us in on the journey from Koston One to Koston 2, but this time around, we prepared a broad range of questions that didn’t focus entirely on the shoe – mainly because we already talked about the design of the shoe back in October of 2012. So what could there be to talk about? There’s some interesting info spilled by Koston and Carboy, so read on below.

Last October, Sneaker News was invited to an exclusive event by Nike Skateboarding for the unveiling of the Nike Koston 2 paired with a keen exploration of the skate culture of New York City. Fast forward to late March and switch time zones to the Left Coast and we were once again to experience an incredible two-day extravaganza out in Los Angeles to celebrate the launch of Eric Koston’s second shoe and the latest installment in an unending string of impeccable Nike adverts – this one called “The Legend Grows”. As usual, Nike came correct with presentation and festivity as we participated in exclusive interviews with Koston and Nike designer Shawn Carboy and ended the experience with a big bash at Nike Skateboarding at Sixth & Mill.

You’ll recall that Tiger Woods popped up in the recent “The Legend Grows” spot helping to spin the tall tale of Eric Koston’s achievements. The appearance was no doubt influenced to some extent by Koston’s love of the game of golf, a love that apparently has resulted in the creation of this weird golf spike that’s got the same overall shape and stitching as the new Nike Eric Koston 2. See a couple extra angles right after the jump and get a behind the scenes look at his recent commercial, which even features Tiger himself hitting the pair with his signature.

Just how good is Eric Koston? Just how hard did he tear down your local skate spot when he rolled through town? This hilarious new spot, featuring the Nike Koston 2 on feet of course, approaches that very subject from a slapstick angle. The story starts off small enough as a couple of kids discuss Koston’s skills, only for the tale to grow taller as stars like Tiger Woods, Kyrie Irving, Neymar Jr., Allyson Felix, and Danny Kass manage to amplify what actually happened to the point where you’ve got Koston eluding police, getting shot at, and saving a baby’s life during a line. See the spot after the jump and watch for the Nike Koston 2 to debut next month.

New York City is a mecca for many things. Basketball – check. Cultural diversity – for centuries. Art and music – you’ll find it everywhere. Skating – darn right. Over the last decade, Nike Skateboarding has enjoyed a meteoric rise from one of the most followed ‘cult’ sectors of the Swoosh to a rock-solid roster of Action Sports superstars, but the ‘how they got there’ hasn’t been much explored.
Nike Skateboarding kicked off a day-long exploration of the NYC skating scene by way of personal tours guided by the Nike Skateboarding team, giving the media an unforeseen insight into the daily routines of the skating stars while revealing some of their beginnings into the sport and how they came to join forces with Nike. We started at the Wythe Hotel in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, took in a show at the Coleman Skate Park under the Manhattan Bridge, and finished off the day with a sick showcase and Nike Eric Koston 2 unveiling in the Chinatown/Financial District border. Continue on for a recap of the day’s events, a chat with Stefan Janoski, and an interview with Eric Koston and Koston 2 designer Shawn Carboy below.
