Back in 2008, Innercity Design released a sneaker-themed art book entitled Art & Sole.  The book evolved into a blog, which has in turn given a spotlight to sneaker-inspired art and new collaborations with the hottest designers and artists.  The whole thing comes full circle with the book’s mini format releasing in conjunction with the Art & Sole Nike Cortez iD Project, a quartet of Try-On grey colorups that add a contrasting sockliner that coordinates with each respective pair’s associated artwork.  The super-limited 40-pair-per-color run just finished up its four-day staggered release, the contributing artists’ work will remain on display at NIKEiD Studio Boxpark through April and you can see a bunch of images after the jump below.

Nike Cortez ‘Blue Thunder’

Nike’s various divisions have at their disposal a variety of old school colors like Varsity Red or Royal, golden era standouts like Infrared and Aquatone and modern classics like Retro and Green Abyss.  It remains to be seen if the Blue Thunder shade debuting on this upcoming Nike Cortez release will leave the kind of legacy those legends created, but there’s no better silo for it to debut upon, even with the original Nike runner now available for iD customization.  You’ll only be able to get this summery combination of sky blue, white and orange from Nike Sportswear, but they should have them available shortly.  via Sneaker Freaker

Nike Cortez iD

nike cortez id 1 570x427 Nike Cortez iD

The Nike Cortez is a triple OG and arguably one of the most significant releases in history, and it’s just been added to the NIKEiD lineup so you can customize a classic runner to suit your personal tastes.  Start by picking between a nylon upper with suede on the toes and eyelets or go all suede, then take the same color range and apply it to two different styles of colorblocking on the world’s first dual-density foam sole.  All this, plus the ability to add one of sixteen different national flags makes for a number of combinations so large you’d have to turn your phone sideways to fit it all in.  Check out a few of the samples cooked up at Nike Harajuku and then head to NIKEiD to make your own.

Nike Cortez Classic OG Leather

nike cortez classic og leather 00 570x380 Nike Cortez Classic OG Leather

The Nike Cortez is no doubt one of the most bare-bones of Nike’s retro models, born during the first wave of innovation from Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight as they broke out from their Onitsuka Tiger affiliation. The sneaker has enjoyed a long lifespan bolstered by big screen appearances, with Forrest Gump famously repping a pair and George Costanza rocking them on the regular. The latest retro treatment is above and beyond the standard fare, with the Nike Cortez Classic OG Leather going for the fine leather look in place of nylon uppers. Follow us after the jump for some detailed shots of this red, white, and blue pair that should show up as a quickstrike release. via ST

Nike Cortez Classic – OG Leather | Spring 2012

nike cortez classic leather spring 2012 Nike Cortez Classic OG Leather | Spring 2012

Among the most easily identifyable classic runners from the Nike’s pre-Air Max era is pictured above in a trio of new colorways that represent the first pairs released since early this summer.  The Nike Cortez Classic is usually never too far away from a new drop, though, and the next set seeks to capture the essence of the original leather-built pairs from 1972.  Pairs in black with white accents or, navy with white and orange, or grey with white plus a red midsole stripe evoke images of the very first set of Swooshed runners from four decades ago, and though the latter pair’s midsole is more of a cream color than true white, these lack the kind of overt pre-yellowing typical to the Nike Sportswear VNTG series.  You’ll be able to see more of each pair when you click on the jump below; did NSW get it right by conveying this shoe’s classic status with the original materials and colors rather than adding the oxidized midsole and laces?  via atmos

Nike Classic Cortez – Summer 2011 Colorways

nike classic cortez nylon fall 2011 colorways size summary Nike Classic Cortez Summer 2011 Colorways

Last month, Complex.com published ‘A Complete Guide to Seinfeld’s Sneakers’, a look at the kicks Jerry wore on his seminal 1990′s sitcom.  Sneakerheads have long admired the quality and quantity of vintage heat you can see in re-runs something like twenty times a day, but if the list were geared toward Seinfeld’s sidekick, it’d be a simple one page homage to the Nike Cortez.  This 1968-born runner was George Costanza’s favorite shoe, a classic model that looks just as fresh as it did upon its debut or fifteen years ago, thanks to these two new colorways.  One matches a Mineral Blue upper with a Bright Mandarin sole stripe for a slight Miami Dolphins nod while the Obsidian and Honeycomb edition is close to the Michigan Wolverines.  In that case, maybe they’re not ‘Costanzas’ at all, but something of a ‘Chad Henne’ pack, and no matter the inspiration, you can find them at Nike Sportswear retailers like Size?.

Nike Cortez x Air Max Sample

nike cortez air max Nike Cortez x Air Max Sample

We’ve seen a Free-soled and Flywire-equipped update, but what would George Costanza think of the latest upgrade to his beloved Nike Cortez?  Check out this sample pair of Nike Cortez x Air Max runners, a combination of the beloved nylon and suede upper from the 1972 waffle-bottomed classic, paired with a pre-yellowed take on 1987′s Air Max 1 sole.  These are sort of like a quick history lesson in pre-1990s Nike running but will purists be willing to embrace Nike Sportswear’s latest hybrid creation?  Perhaps a more relevant question would be one regarding this model’s release, so be sure to stick with Sneaker News to see if the Nike Cortez x Air Max 1 ever hits store shelves.  via Far Away Life
