Not long ago Sneaker News reported the re-release of three classic 90’s basketball kicks – the Nike Air Max Uptempo 97, Nike Air Max Penny 1, and the Nike Air Go LWP. While the Penny 1 has seen a number of release since the original, the Uptempo 97 and Air Go LWP are both definite rookies when it comes to retro rehashings. Starting off with the Pennys, a black/purple colorway will release alongside the Orlando Magic colorway. A Phoenix Suns colorway of the Penny 1 is also set to release but these show no hints of the Mandarin Orange that is part of the Suns colorway. Two more colorways of the Air Max Uptempo 97 will also release; both pairs will be constructed of a mix of leather and durabuck with the classic midsole that featured the visible tri-pressure Air and the thermoplastic polyurethane pods.
Last but not least is the Nike Air Go LWP, a shoe from 1994, right smack in the middle of Nike Basketball’s peak. You might’ve remembered Hardaway – both Penny and Tim – wearing these (and extra kudos if you can recall the Nike commercial with Penny on radio). The shoe wasn’t exclusive to the Hardaways, as Reggie Miller, Brian Grant, Mookie Blaylock, and a number of others wore these. The Air Go LWP was one of Nike’s most lightweight basketball shoes at the time and featured a new cushioning system at the forefoot that would later be called Zoom.
