Why is it that the first shoe of a signature line always gets overlooked? The first Air Jordan, Zoom LeBron, Zoom Kobe, and Air Penny are undoubtedly recognized for planting the respective seeds but there’s no denying that they don’t get the love they truly deserve. The Nike Penny line is one of the few Nike signature lines that have seen success both during and after its time, and it all started with the Nike Air Max Penny, which featured a design unmatched by any other basketball shoe during that era of Nike kicks. The trademark over-sized swoosh, the big Air Max Unit, and ‘bootie’ infrastructure were the key ingredients to Penny’s first, and we saw its return a number of times this decade.
Some notable colorways was the 2005 release of the Knicks colorway that came during Penny’s time at the Garden, or the Asia-Exclusive Hoop Pack release. Coming in 2011 alongside the OG Orlando colorway is a Suns colorway, giving props to Penny’s tenure with Phoenix – which should remind you of the hard-to-find Nike Penny IV in the Suns colorway. Both pairs of the Penny 1 are set to drop in 2011 as a general release with a price-tag of $125.00, so if you managed to miss out on a pair of the OG colorway in 2005 and in 2007, your chance will arrive once more.
