Is The Nike Mag Coming? All The Questions That Still Need Answers

Nike Mag Feature

October 21, 2015. It’s a date that holds important meaning to fans of the Back to the Future movie trilogy. They it as the date Marty McFly and Doc Brown travel to the future to help change the fate of Marty’s future family within the plot of Back to the Future, Part II. There’s sure to be a few parties going on that day among BTTF nerds complete with holographic hats, hoverboard replicas, and maybe even a DeLorean if they’re really serious, as they celebrate the beloved movie. However, it’s sneaker collectors that are especially concerned with this date right now, as it’s the speculated release day of the 2015 Nike Mag.

Rumored to be dropping in 2015—complete with power laces this time—ever since the epic eBay auction release of the shoe in 2011, Mag fever is at an all-time peak right now as we all await any sign of confirmation from Nike that the shoe will indeed release. As we get closer and closer to the date October 21st, Nike’s lips are still sealed at this point, and we can all only hope to get some answers soon. We’d all take any scrap of information about the Mag’s release at this point, but continue reading for the six major Mag questions we need answered right now. If only somebody had a time machine…

1. When Will the Mag Release?

If it releases at all, that is. All hints and common sense point to the Mag releasing on October 21st, but at this point, we still don’t know for sure. October 21st is exactly two weeks away from today, so we hope something will be announced very soon.

2. How Will It Release?

As we all know, the last Nike Mag release in 2011 came in the form of all pairs being auctioned off for charity (The Michael J. Fox Foundation) via eBay. Will Nike do the same this time? Will it be an online only release via Nike? Will they release anywhere in stores? Right now there’s more possibilities than Biff’s betting options to become a millionaire after he gets Gray’s Sports Almanac.

3. How Much Will It Cost?

The 1,500 pairs of Mags that released in 2011 brought home a total of $4.7 million dollars through the eBay auctions, meaning the average price of a pair clocked in at just over $3,000. If the Mag has a standard retail release this time, it’s still anybody’s guess as to the box price. But we can assume, especially with power laces, that they’ll break $1,000. Great Scott! Could the Mag become Nike’s most expensive sneaker ever?

4. Will they Really Have Power Laces?

Is the technology for functioning power laces really there yet? Tinker Hatfield himself said the shoe would drop this time with the self-lacing system, but it’s not unreasonable for us all to wonder how Nike’s going to pull it off the impressive technology.

5. How Limited Will It Be?

Even if we get the first four questions answered, it still won’t mean much to most of us if the shoe is incredibly limited and impossible to get. Will the average sneaker head or Back to the Future fan get a chance at the shoe? Or will you have to be rich to cop a pair like in 2011?

6. How Will It Be Packaged?

Will the Mag come in the same plutonium box as the 2011 release? Or will Nike do something different this time? We suggest that it comes in that sick Nike duffel bag from the movie.
