The 2022 Doernbecher Freestyle collection was unveiled in full on February 25th. Since then, individual pairs of the lineup have emerged via official images ahead of their release dates. The latest?: The NikeCourt Zoom Vapor Cage 4 by Maylee Phelps.
At 15 years old, Phelps is an accomplished junior wheelchair tennis player. Currently ranked 11th in the world, the Portland, Ore.-native hopes to represent the U.S.A. in the 2028 Los Angeles Paralympics. The decision to add her personalized touch to the Vapor Cage 4, then, was a straight-forward one. Hand-drawn stars; colorful, marbled outsoles; and spina bifida-related details land all throughout the tennis-ready silhouette. Born with the spine and spinal cord-affecting condition, Phelps has had a number of surgeries at the Oregon Health & Science University Doernbecher hospital, reminding herself to “Keep Pushing,” a reminder she’s stamped onto her Doernbecher Freestyle contribution for others. The 15-year-old junior wheelchair tennis player also includes a graphic of her serving a tennis ball on the pair’s tongue, as well as “MP” initials on the heel. (After her Paralympic career, Phelps plans to open up her own bakery, specializing in raspberry macarons.)
