Born in 1990, the ASICS Gel-Lyte III has since become an icon of the sneaker world. This is thanks to its countless re-issues in original and new colorways, as well as a plethora of memorable collaborative releases. But what made the GEL-Lyte III the brand’s go-to retro runner in the first place? The unique split tongue, of course. The innovative and unorthodox tongue design was crafted as an alternative to the standard shoe tongue, which often slipped to one side or the other—instead of staying in the middle where it was supposed to. The resulting shoe made for an atypical and forever-remembered running silhouette.
But now the GEL-Lyte III evolves, boldly losing the split tongue in favor of an even more lifestyle friendly standard tongue. As part of the new ASICS Tiger EVO line, the GEL-Lyte EVO NT is born, complete with its “new tongue”. Stripped away are all of the usual layers of the classic GEL-Lyte III, revealing a fully modern seamless TPU-bonded mesh upper that makes sure the lines of the original still exist. The sole unit is also retooled, featuring a predominantly foam construction with visible GEL technology for lighter weight and added comfort. The ASICS GEL-Lyte EVO NT arrives July 15th in five colorways at Foot Locker and select ASICS Tiger retailers.
