Through both UNDERCOVER and sacai, Nike spearheaded the return of the Daybreak and Waffle Racer, respectively, each bearing the Japanese labels signature sense for design. And now, almost two years thereafter, the Swoosh is effectively taking the best parts of both collaborations and funneling it into the brand new Waffle One.
While the doubled, layered executions of Chitose Abe are gone, the same beloved retro frame is intact, its frame made up of the very same mesh and suede materials. The latter covers atop the eye stays as it does the toe cap, brandishing a black that directly contrasts the hot pink underlayer adjacent. Swooshes, then, wrap the side in a robust leather, the outer face shaded to complement the mustard yellow stitch and trims found along the collar. Below, the tooling — though reminiscent of something original — gradually warps to a shape befitting of Jun Takahashi’s collections as its heel extends upwards to a sharp edge. What’s more, alongside all of the aforementioned, the model’s tongue replaces the typical nylon fixtures for one thin and similar to that of the React Element 55/87.
