Interesting thing about the early ’90s: countless retro models and colorways have been borrowed from this classic era when seemingly everyone wore plaid button-downs, and yet the guys who made them the must-have garment during that period have seen their music largely absent the kind of revivals that have retroactively benefited other genres. Put simply, at this point in history, grunge music is little more than a town we drove through between punkton and indieville. Bands like Nirvana, Alice and Chains and Stone Temple Pilots have maintained significant cult followings, but the music is just too dang dark to survive in today’s club-happy radio climate.
So with all that in mind, it’s absolutely stunning that Pearl Jam have managed to release nine albums and sell out arenas across the country for twenty-one years now. And given the similarity they share as being alt staples, then discarded, and brought back again stronger than ever, it’s fitting to see Eddie Vedder’s band work with Vans Classic on a pack of Sk8-His. The Pearl Jam x Vans Sk8-His are evenly split between an old school Seattle Supersonics look and another with black suede framing its plaid flannel side panels.
