The Air Jordan V “Black Grape” will release tomorrow, June 15th. The colorway will be the first one this year to stray from the original colorways as far as the Air Jordan V is concerned. Of course it doesn’t stray too terribly far, sporting the same purple and emerald combo of its OG counterpart while merely flipping out the white base for a black one. The resulting shoe is one that’s got quite a bit of buzz going, with many folks applauding them as a proper new-age take on a classic look. The Jordan Son of Mars Low is getting much more traditional with this June release. The combination is a white/cement one, which manages to link the hybrid model up the most with its Air Jordan III DNA. Keep in mind that the Jordan Son of Mars Low is still being billed officially as just the Jordan Son of Low, curiously missing out on the Spike Lee connection on the box tag. When the Air Jordan IX came back around in 2013, the sneaker was very much wrapped up in the story of of Jordan’s first retirement from the game of basketball. Let’s keep in mind though that that story was sort of around for the shoe’s initial 1993 release as well though. We’re speaking of the “Powder Blue” colorway, one that opted for Michael Jordan’s old UNC colors as a way of telling a story other than the “Bulls” one. You’ll recall that accompanying ad campaigns even featured MJ in that uni with those sneakers. This time he’s releasing a custom that leap-frogs the release date of the retail colorway it’s inspired by-the Air Jordan IV “Fire Red Nubuck”. More often than not if there’s an athlete posted up on social media bragging about their sneaker collection, it’s a basketball player. They aren’t the only shoe dudes out there in the world of pro sports though. Proving that again is Jordan Brand backed NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin, who did a little showing off of his own by giving us a peak at the massive amounts of Jordans stacked up in his garage. Not too many pairs are exposed, but as you can see there is no shortage of retro boxes throughout. How long will it be before we see the Air Jordan VII again? In past times we’d expect the sneaker to stay away for a good four years or so, but we’re in a totally different climate for 2013. The shoe was last on shelves in 2011, so we wouldn’t be surprised if it came back around as soon as next year. We also wouldn’t be surprised to see the “Hare” Air Jordan VII among them. Shown here is a pair that came packaged in the CDP set up, one that was subsequently made all the more covetous thanks to the presence of Michael Jordan’s autograph. Last week’s Sneaker News “Beauty Shots” of the Air Jordan V “Black Grape” was probably the final nail in the coffin in regards to your response to the release. Those who were “on the fence” were likely pushed over with great force into another Saturday sneaker purchase, while those who already considered these a must-have only found the wait tougher to endure. The original Air Jordan V “Grape” – one of the most revered OGs in the entire Air Jordan catalog – was already met with a great response when it re-released one month ago, and we figure the Black Grapes will experience the same simply because it tightly grasps that heralded “Grape” motif while embodying a whole new identity.
