KANYE WEST
Kanye West is a hip-hop and pop culture superstar best known for his music, taste in fashion, and sneakers. He is noted as one of the most well-versed sneakerheads in the celebrity community and is consistently seen wearing select sneakers in his music videos, live shows, and in public. He is also the first non-athlete to his his own Nike signature shoe called the Air Yeezy, which debuted in 2009. The Air Yeezy 2 is scheduled for a release in June 2012.

Kanye West is showing off some more of his Nike Flyknit Trainer range, the rapper apparently sticking to the plainer pairs available for the futuristic Swoosh design. This time around he popped up in the white/black version, reversing the set up from the prior sighting. Kanye West breaks his recent string of Air Jordan sightings with this pair, the recently released and much celebrated Nike Flyknit Trainer+. The entirety of the Nike Flyknit collection has been met with open arms from the sneaker community during its 2012 introduction, everything from the HTM pairs to the Racers to the Trainers selling out at various speeds. As high up as Kanye West’s fashion taste may go, it’s pretty safe to say that he’ll never completely abandon the realm of everyman sneakers that he, and the rest of us, grew up on. So you can still count on him for an Air Jordan sighting every now and then, with his selection zeroing in on just a handful of OG colorways for the most part. A recent trip to Paris saw ‘Ye busting out a ‘Bred’ pair once again (this time the AJKO), and even getting off the high fashion wagon a little bit more with that Supreme hoodie (a throwback to the days before he rocked labels with accent marks in their name exclusively). While the greater American public tends to get a bit squirmy over increased airport security because of the whole “encroaching on civil liberties” thing, sneaker fiends have an extra reason to sweat right before we reach that metal detector before a flight. Kanye West gets acclimated with that in this short clip, hitting JFK with Kim Kardashian and forced to run his prized Nike Air Yeezy 2′s through the x-ray machine. You might panic a bit as they nearly get smashed by another piece of luggage, but we promise it ends well. Are you excited for the 2013 retro of the Air Jordan 1 in the OG black and royal colorway? We thought so. It would appear that a handful of rappers have reason to be excited as well, with the sneaker being spotted on feet for the second time this week. Now hold up I ain’t trying to stunt man/but the Yeezys jumped over the Jumpman
That Kanye claim was first made on his recently released track New Gold Flow, appropriately echoed last night as him and the GOOD Music team performed a gang of tracks at the 2012 BET Awards. And while we’re not making any claims that ‘Ye is anywhere close to Mike’s line as far as importance in the sneaker world, you wouldn’t know it by looking at the celebrity crowd in attendance for the award show on the weekend. Kevin Hart wore the Nike Air Yeezy 2 ‘Pure Platinum’ as did Kanye, with Wale and Spike Lee both wearing the ‘Black/Solar Red’ at one point or other. Separating himself from saturation of his second Nike design Kanye even broke out a sample pair of Nike Air Yeezy 1′s to prove his footwear prowess. Of course Wale, self described as “Mr. never wear the same thing” had a nice switch up as well when he brought out some unreleased heat in the form of the Nike Air Penny V ‘Phoenix Suns’. Has Kanye even worn the Yeezy 2s since they officially dropped a few Saturdays back? As his big bro Jay-Z would say, we “off that” (or Kanye’s already fully focused on the Air Yeezy 3), but one piece of apparel that will never be ‘off’ is the original Air Jordan 1 in the classic Black/Red colorway. Kanye was spotted rocking the Retros wearing a – wait for it – all black outfit, and although it’s tough to tell whether his kicks are the ‘Banned’ variety or the 2010 or 2001 Retro release, Kanye’s taste in Air Jordans has been a near-strict selection of OG colorways (and we’re leaning more towards the non-Banned anyway).
