When it comes to Michael Jordan’s signature sneakers, the Air Jordan 9 may be the most unheralded single-digit model – perhaps because #23 never laced them up while he was with the Chicago Bulls. Released during his time playing minor league baseball, the Tinker Hatfield-designed sneaker pivoted away from the straps and chenille found on the Air Jordan 8 in favor of a stripped-back aesthetic. And yet, this silhouette is the pair MJ’s statue outside the United Center is wearing. Though other models may come to mind when reminiscing about all of Jordan’s achievements, the AJ9 fits the statue perfectly as it speaks to the Jumpman’s iconic status via words like “freedom” on the sole and an emblem of the planet at the heel. Its upcoming “Racer Blue” iteration will continue Jordan’s legend through the same details, but is adding an iridescent finish to its mudguards that animates an otherwise understated scheme. The moniker-sake hues also liven up the branding on the heel and midsole.
