Matt Varga In the wake of similar programs for the New Balance 1000 and the dominant New Balance 550, the Boston brand’s retro program has been going swimmingly so far. Earlier this year, an AURALEE Fashion Week preview and a soft launch by way of Aime Leon Dore tipped off that the New Balance 475 would be next to return from the archives, and its mainline return is almost upon us.
For this “debut,” Boston creatives queue up a trio of pastel looks, blending together soft combinations of “Everglade Green/Marsh Green/Mallard Green,” “Ice Wine/Taro/Concord Grape,” & “Quarry Blue/Chrome Blue/Heron Blue.” Leaning into the sneakers’ retro composition, tonal treatments of off-white and trademark neutral grey land underfoot.
While a slimmer and taller profile set the model apart from the New Balance 574, the same design language and tooling that Boston staple showcase are very much present with the 475. The shape of the toe-box and the look of the foot entrance demonstrate the similarity- either shoe crafted as a premier runner during their introduction. To that end, the 475 returns to shelves after its original 1986 debut, aiming at a lifestyle turn akin to the one the Vomero 5 was able to achieve.
