Earlier this year, MSCHF — the Brooklyn-based art collective known for doing the unthinkable — made Astro Boy’s signature red footwear a reality, causing quite a stir across much of social media. And now, Nintendo is attempting to outdo the viral sensation, teaming up with Red Wings to recreate the iconic plumber’s boots.
The Super Mario franchise needs no introduction, as it’s objectively one of the most famous video game series of all-time. Since the first installment back in 1985, we’ve witnessed no shortage of notable entries, from the revolution that was Super Mario 64 to the much newer yet equally beloved Super Mario Odyssey. Soon, the Mushroom Kingdom native will even be returning to the big screen in “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which is scheduled to hit theaters early this April.
In celebration of both the film’s upcoming premiere as well as Mario Day 2023, Nintendo have joined forces with Red Wings, commissioning their craftsmanship for a lifesize recreation of the Italian plumber’s signature kicks. Modeled after its appearance in the upcoming adaptation, the boots are made with extreme care, bearing a full leather, meticulously-stitched construction. What’s more, the heel pad is made with mushroom-infused materials, subtly nodding to the platforming icon’s choice of food.
Enjoy a close-up, detailed look at the Mario boots ahead. As they were likely made for promotional purposes, it’s doubtful that Nintendo and Red Wings will releasing pairs to the public.
