Updated December 15th, 2023: The New Balance MT580 GORE-TEX is available now on newbalance.com in both colorways ($170).

Over the last year, the New Balance 580 has expanded its roster of styles more than it has in ages. As weather conditions across the globe continue becoming wetter and colder, the trail-inspired silhouette has taken on two GORE-TEX-backed finishes.
Clad in tonal, muted green and black, the New Balance 580 GORE-TEX seems identical to the standard design that debuted in Japan in 1996. Closer inspection, however, reveals two key differences between the Made in USA NB 585-offshoot and the newly-surfaced duo: water-resistant lining and Vibram outsoles. “GORE-TEX” tags appear on the lateral mid-foot, while Vibram’s iconic yellow badge is stamped onto the traction. Both modifications to New Balance Japan’s creation ensures a tough and durable ride when putting the shoes to the test. Construction follows a decades-old blueprint, but the modern NB 580 has had its toe slimmed down and collar height reduced for an easier-to-wear update. Components on the green-heavy pair also indulge in shades of black, while the accompanying dark-colored offering enjoys New Balance-appropriate grayscale contrast.
Enjoy detailed photos of the pairs ahead, and find the shoes at select shops overseas. A stateside newbalance.com launch should be in the works.
