Japan born but New York educated, Kenzo Minami’s abstract mind is nothing new for the Reebok Instapump Fury. Now the second time the artist has chosen the silhouette as his canvas, the collaborative tooling is taking a leap much more daring than ever before, dialing prints and patterns to a pleasantly deafening volume. Constructions, conversely, are left primarily as is: hits of smooth leather, textiles, and rubber hardware blend to an either black or white with most panels barely able to pick one or the other. Even the neutral-based midsole sees to the artistic treatment with stripes, checkerboard, and more intricate geometrics emblazoned all along; the upper follows suit but with a much more heavy-handed approach as designs seem to change with no warning and warp to waves or misshape with all sorts of new motifs. More legible symbols then find place at certain points along the model with red stamps toward the toe and “R58” typed onto the eye stay, but the most compelling of the sort is undeniable the cloud-adorned peace sign along the heel.
