Before folks were saying LeBron James is like Magic Johnson but with Karl Malone’s body, Penny Hardaway was heralded as the NBA’s next great big point guard. Penny was on the All-Rookie squad his first year All-NBA the next three in a row after that, but a series of knee injuries prematurely ended what could have been a hall of fame career. Penny’s on-court efforts will always come with an asterisk of sorts, but his legacy in the shoe game is Mount Rushmore-level. The Air Penny and its Half Cent offspring have been massive hits over the past 15 years and it was Hardaway’s ringing endorsement that brought the Nike Air Foamposite One out of a Swoosh designer’s bag and into the sneaker pantheon. Pictured above is the OG colorway that debuted in summer 1997, a retro release that perfectly reproduces the original.
