Today, Jordan Brand officially unveiled the latest chapter in the storied legacy that is the Air Jordan. The new shoe debuts at the heels of the brand’s recent expansion of its revitalized roster – one that now includes Zion Williamson and Jayson Tatum. It is apparent that the chief task of the AJ34 was to reduce weight; A design team led by Tate Kuerbis focused on a reductive approach, stripping away unnecessary parts of the shoe while ensuring the utmost in performance.
That explains the gaping hole in the midsole. The cored out unit features thick Zoom cushioning at the forefoot and the heel, with the Eclipse Plate, an evolved form of the Flight Speed plate from the Air Jordan 28, providing a piston-like springiness for the high-flying aerial attacks to the rim – a common aspect of the respective games of Zion, Jayson, Blake, and Russell. Not only does the Eclipse Plate refuse any added weight, its uncased nature allows for zero restraint in movement.
The Air Jordan 34 is already one of the lightest basketball shoes ever created by Jordan. Clocking in at 13.1 ounces for a men’s size 9, the Air Jordan 34 needed proper traction to ensure precision cuts and jumps. The herringbone traction is a rather classic pattern (why mess with what works), with circular windows revealing the Zoom cushioning.
The Air Jordan 34 will officially release on September 25th in the legacy white/black/red and the energetic “Blue Void” for an MSRP of $175.
