Japanese fashion imprint Needles has long been a mover in the space by championing craftsmanship and detail. It’s no surprise then that the few times they’ve taken to sneakers, the results have been understated and low-key. Last linking up last year for a two-pack in September, they’re reuniting after that short spell off to deliver a new take on one of the sneaker brand’s newest models with the Needles x ASICS GEL-NYC.
For the uninitiated, the aforementioned previous collaboration came with two pairs of Needles ASICS EX89s. Chiefly in the color palette, that release is highly instructive when looking at the pair in question, both capsules carrying the nocturnal combination of black and purple. On this Gel-NYC, the collaborators go even more simplistic in terms of the chosen shades, eschewing the white alternate and grey detailing that made its way onto the EX89.
Despite choosing to go to a simplified two-tone formulation, the end product is a shoe that feels much more intricate. The combination dots the rope laces and outsoles, but also serves as a through-line for the whole sneaker, with those royal accents making their way to the co-branded alternating tongues, the Needles logo on the heel, and the calling card visible stitching that marks each ASICS GEL-NYC model.
Initial information about this collaborative pair has been limited, but we’re anticipated a wide release coming in March to both the Needles & ASICS website as well as select retailers.
In more news for the silhouette, the ASICS GEL-NYC “Wide Mesh” Pack nears a wide release on March 1st.
