KITH, Pharrell, KoRn, and the Teenage Mutant Turtles (see the adidas Superstar “Splinter” and adidas Superstar “Shredder.”) adidas has recruited all of those imprints and franchises in just the past two weeks- safe to say, there’s no shortage of collaborative output coming from the Three Stripes. Yet among that crowded field, Japan’s atmos might be the most reliable, already stretching their catalog into 2024 with the atmos adidas Gazelle from last month. The two brands are clearly intent on keeping up that momentum, circling back for the atmos x adidas adiStar Cushion 3 “Twilight.”
Their latest collaboration is very much on trend, spotlighting a model adidas themselves offered up as part of a 2000s retro initiative in January. Extending that aesthetically, techy chrome accents run over the upper, centered with metallic Three Stripes branding. Midnight black sets a grounded foundation underfoot, but the azure notes throughout the profile are really the main attraction. Representative of the titular “Twilight” theme, atmos took inspiration from the Tokyo sky, expressing the sundown motif with a light blue to navy gradient that runs toe to heel.
In their official promo materials, atmos has presented this collaboration as a fusion of “retro and modern.” That claim certainly rings true via the Y2K silhouette and updated colorway, but this shoe’s overall resemblance to the graphic-clad sneakers of the 2010s (the adidas ZX Flux an obvious comparison) means this ties together multiple eras of Three Stripes design.
The atmos adidas adiStar Cushion 3 “Twilight” releases on May 25th via adidas Japan and atmos Japan. Following in the footsteps of previous adidas x atmos collaborations, a stateside release is ultimately unlikely.
Sticking with the German giant, here’s our latest on the adidas AE1 Low including the game-worn “Ascent” colorway.
