With the confirmation of all-time classics such as the Black Cat 4s, Air Jordan 1 “Bred”, and even the recent release of the Black Cat 3s, the Jumpman is looking to regain the trust of its loyal followers with the reissue of some of the most celebrated Air Jordans in history. Originally releasing way back in 1990, the Grape Jordan 5s were among the earliest off-colored pairs in the budding Air Jordan legacy. Drifting away from the Chicago Bulls team-matching formulas, Nike began offering up its chief signature shoe line in new color styles to broaden the reach of the Jumpman.
On a cultural standpoint, the Air Jordan 5 “Grape” may be best noted for its many appearances on television, particularly the hit show The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air starring Will Smith.
A History Of Air Jordan 5 “Grape” Releases
After the original release in 1990, the Grape Jordan 5s didn’t come back to retail until the year 2006. This first-ever retro release gained a lot of attention from sneaker fans despite the lack of a Nike Air logo on the heel and the infamous paint cracking on the midsoles. The shoes released again in 2012, but not without complaints directed primarily at the bulky shape of the toe-box. A laceless version of the shoe dropped in 2018 as a tribute to the aforementioned relevance to the hit 1990s sitcom.
