The biggest shock of Super Bowl weekend (in sneakers, at least) was that Kendrick Lamar decided against the Nike Shox R4. Instead of lacing up the piston-powered silhouette as he did for his “GNX” cover or the “Pop-Out” before it, he opted for a pair of Deion Sanders’ shoes, perhaps more fitting for the gridiron stage. Nonetheless, K. Dot’s stamp of approval coincides with a real retro moment for the model, and rolling out experimental colorways like the “Iridescent” Shox R4 featured here might be what Nike needs to take things to the next level.
It’s a familiar tale in that Beaverton is beginning to take bigger risks on their Shox silos as the start of the retro gets further into the rear view. For further proof, look to the two flowery R4 pairs revealed a few weeks before this, or novel gradient makeups of the TL. The color-changing siding here really does speak for itself, an immediately attention-grabbing swatch of leather crashing between otherwise sleek anchoring, including the snowy base layer and silver Shox at the heel.
The Nike Shox R4 “Iridescent” should appear on Nike.com and local shelves in the near future, sliding in in women’s sizing for $160.
