Nike Honors Jackie Robinson Day With The Cortez

Inspired by a league-wide tradition.

Nike Honors Jackie Robinson Day With The Cortez

Nike’s honorary recognition of Jackie Robinson’s barrier-breaking contribution to professional sports continues on its observed day of April 15th. For 2025, the Swoosh follows the annual tradition and pays its respects to the legend with a special edition Cortez inspired by the league-wide retired 42 jersey number.

This observed holiday in the sport began in 1997 when Major League Baseball retired Jackie’s 42 across the entire league; only those already wearing the number would be allowed to have that number until their own retirement. As a show of reverence to the iconic hero, Major League Baseball requests all players to wear 42 on Jackie Robinson Day, a tradition that continues to remain strong to this day.

This Cortez further amplifies the importance of the number as it features an all-over-print of the immortalized digits on the interior. Thirty different font styles representing all thirty MLB franchises are reflected in the pattern.

Nike keeps to a classic color-blocking of white, photon dust, and black on the upper, with the “42” proudly placed on the heel above red baseball-style stitching.

An official release is scheduled for April 15th, 2025 at 10 AM ET on SNKRS for $100. Similarly designed Nike Griffey 2 Cleats are also dropping soon.
