What Makes The 2025 “Fire Red” 5s Special?
While not the first time the “Fire Red” Jordan 5 has been brought back to market, there has never been a retro as tip-top as this. For many, this is indeed the first true retro release of this all-time classic from 1990, because it’s the only time the original Nike Air branding on the heel and the “23” jersey number has been embroidered on the heel in this specific numbering style.
In addition to the exterior details, the Jordan Brand footwear team ensured that the shape of the shoes are in line with 1990s standards. A shallower toe-box and pinched heel reduces the bulk that have made Jordan Retros rather cumbersome to wear.
Brief History Of The “Fire Red” 5s
Two versions of the Air Jordan 5 “Fire Red” released in 1990, one of which looked like the retro we have before us today. The other featured a silver tongue and no “23” stitching on the lateral side among other key changes. Both versions have retro’d multiple times since their debut, with the silver tongue arriving in 2000, 2008, 2013, and 2020. The black tongue has returned in 2006, 2013, and now 2025.
Michael Jordan’s greatest “Fire Red” 5s moment occurred in the silver tongue version on March 28, 1990. His airness notched a career-high 69 points in an OT Bulls win against the Cleveland Cavaliers; truly insane for an era when even the best teams regularly scored fewer than 100 per game.
