Nearing three years on the market, the New Balance 1906R still somehow holds onto serious market share with the casual consumer. We’ll leave hard strategic discussion for another day, but paradoxically, part of what’s helped keep the model fresh is sheer volume, particularly in minting multiple offshoots from the 1906U to the 1906A to everyone’s favorite, the 1906L. Despite those splashier siblings, the 1906R remains capable of issuing its own standout looks, perhaps the case with the black and green edition on tap.

While the darkened foundation of black mesh and chrome overlays isn’t anything entirely new for the silhouette, pairing those notes with the “slime green” mentioned in our title certainly makes for an off-kilyer look, evoking vibrant fare like the “Neon Nights” that made a serious impact on the grey market chiefly for its subversion of mainline looks. In the time since, New Balance has revisited similar aesthetic concepts, yet even if the novelty isn’t intact the way it once was, this nocturnal formula still makes for a striking overall pair nonetheless.
