If asked to conjure up the essential colorway of MJ’s roster of signature models, you’d hit on black and red more often than not; assuredly for the Air Jordan 4, Jordan 6, Jordan 8, and Jordan 11, arguably for the Jordan 1, Jordan 3, and Jordan 5. The Air Jordan 1 in particular has merged the two broody shades countless times, each one on the Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG minting a new classic in its canon.

If you’ve ever been torn between a “Bred” or a “Bred Toe,” the Air Jordan 1 Mid SE featured here is specifically tailored to quell that indecision. You can trace the cues of multiple pairs from the last decade within its build, borrowing “Bred Toe” blocking, a fiery red Swoosh interruption from the casino-ready “Gym Red,” and the glossy patent leather of the aptly titled “Patent Bred.” Even without those ties to the backlog, it’s as sensible an embrace of Mike’s most iconic colorway all the same, just with a more accessible price tag than some of the coveted Retro releases mentioned throughout this piece.
