Matt Varga Denim has never truly gone out of style, but footwear brands are increasingly warming up to bringing the classic Americana fabric onto their silhouettes. Further, Japanese denim aesthetics are on the rise, something stamped by Apple head Tim Cook as he sported a Sashiko-Girls-crafted version of the Vomero Plus in Ginza for the tech giant’s store opening. Not to be left out, adidas Originals is getting in on the action with their own splashy customization, as PHILLLLLTHY (AKA Phillip Leyesa) crafts a Boro version of the adidas Superstar.
Our astute readers may recognize the broad outlines of this story, as this isn’t the first time that Leyesa and the Three Stripes have collided, uniting for an NMD S1 in 2022. Back again three years later, the Brooklyn artist was tabbed personally by the adidas team to create just ten pairs of the “Boro” adidas Superstar, notably swapping out the iconic rubber shell toe for the titular patched-up, repair-forward materiality, Of course, there’s no shortage of denim elsewhere on the profile, nor its indigio tones imbued into the midsole. Luxe leather interiors and co-branded tags round out this shoe.
Not only would you have to be exceptionally lucky to get your hands on a pair, you’d also sadly have to be a time traveller — PHILLLLLTHY hosted an adidas Superstar “Boro” giveaway for one pair of the ten that’s already concluded by the time of publication.
