Vans will never not be cool. What it will do, however, is surge and wane in popularity based on trends that are largely out of the brand’s control, though it deserves credit for routinely striking while the iron’s hot. And boy is it hot right now. The SoCal skate and surf imprint is coming off a colossal 2025 that saw myriad timely collabs and plenty of heat from its OTW division, namely a Sneaker of the Year candidate in the Chanel-inspired Old Skool. Now the brand is sailing into 2026 with a new slip-on called the Harbor Mule, a more comfortable and cushioned take on a longstanding icon.
The Harbor Mule plays off the Vans Slip-On with an open back and new suede upper that envelops the sidewalls, complete with faux fur lining for max coziness. Black and beige colorways have hit the net as of this writing, both of which give clear Birkenstock Boston vibes.
The real point of discussion here comes via the tech. The Harbor Mule is built on a full VR3Cush midsole, one of the cushioning systems Vans uses in its various insoles. It’s fairly comparable to other known setups like ComfyCush in terms of comfort, but separates itself by being constructed from mostly biodegradable foam. The fact that it encompasses the entire midsole suggests a more plush and comfortable footbed than most of the Vans icons we know and love.

This is a pretty conceivable invention given how many people (including yours truly) keep Vans Slip-Ons by the door as their go-to “quick trip” shoe. Easy to slip on, easy to style, and easy to beat to shreds without feeling too guilty. To that point, early indications are that the Harbor Mule might be Vans’ next big viral hit. The model has already arrived in select overseas markets and has begun selling out at some retailers.
The Harbor Mule is expected to make its way stateside in the near future, although no concrete date has been announced as of this writing. See detailed pics below and stay tuned for further updates.
