Whenever a major sporting event takes place in Los Angeles, there are so many stars to potentially align. The city of angels is home to an abundance of talent, and skateboarding has its own SoCal King who goes by the name of Paul Rodriguez. A long-time Nike SB signature athlete, P-Rod has represented his home city and state with pride, and for the upcoming All-Star Weekend, he’s paying homage to one of the most influential figures in LA sportsdom.
The upcoming Nike SB P-Rod 1 Retro will indeed be dropping during NBA All-Star week, arriving in a “Habanero Red” edition that is a clear-cut nod to Kobe Bryant’s final All-Star Game MVP award in 2011. That game took place in Los Angeles during which Kobe dropped 37 points to lead the Western Conference to a convincing victory, earning his fourth Most Valuable Player nod of his career. The hits of red, dark red, and gold are arranged to match that year’s All-Star Game jerseys, with lace dubrae directly referencing the specific WEST text on the chest.
In February of 2020, the NBA renamed the Most Valuable Player trophy to the NBA All-Star Game Kobe Bryant MVP Award; this came mere weeks after Kobe’s tragic death on January 26th, 2020.
A release date for the Nike SB P-Rod 1 “All-Star” has yet to be announced, but expect a drop in the days leading up to the game on February 15th.
