There’s digging into the archive, and then there’s digging to the very bottom of it. Nike has done just that with the return of the Moon Shoe, teeing up the first-ever releases of the brand’s original prototype, the very model that helped transform Nike from a humble Japanese sneaker importer into a house known for innovation.

First reintroduced by Jacquemus through an ongoing collaborative series, the Moon Shoe officially entered Nike’s mainline canon with a “Black/White” colorway at the top of April. That sets the stage for a larger coming-out party next month, with “Midnight Navy,” “Soft Yellow,” and “Summit White” colorways scheduled to launch on May 7th.

Recreating the original Moon Shoe perfectly is a near-impossible task, but the current version does an applaudable job celebrating the OG in a more modern, realistically wearable way. The most crucial element sits underfoot, where Bill Bowerman’s pioneering waffle outsole anchors the design. Lightweight mesh forms the base, overlaid by slim protective panels and Swooshes on both sides.

The most obvious comparison is to Onitsuka Tiger shoes, and that’s no coincidence. Do keep in mind that Phil Knight and co. were selling models like the Mexico 66 out of a van in the years before Nike became its own brand. The return of the Moon Shoe feels like a response to the Japanese label’s renewed trendiness, and a clever one at that.

Again, the “Midnight Navy,” “Soft Yellow,” and “Summit White” Nike Moon Shoe colorways shown below are all set to release on May 7th. The model appears to be a women’s exclusive, retailing for $105.
