LaMelo Ball’s signature line so far has been defined by the PUMA MB.03 and its predecessors, carving out an impressive market share in a crowded field with trademark explosive, eccentric sneakers. A frequent “collaborator” over the line’s lifespan has been LaFrancé, Ball’s own streetwear/lifestyle brand. Now reaching beyond limited edition colorways, LaFrancé is remaining in the mix for a brand new silhouette, the PUMA LaFrancé Amour.
Those same themes of maximalist eccentricity remain from LaMelo shoes we’ve seen before. Most eye catching is the patent leather overlay that runs rampant over the upper, exposing underlying mesh in circular cut-outs at the quarter. The finer details keep up that energy, slight embroidery dancing across the toe-box. More circular protrusions on the midsole are stamped with Ball motifs, repeating “1 of 1,” “Not From Here” and the LF logo.
The sneakers at least takes some cues from high fashion sneakers that LaMelo has added to his tunnel fits, the work of Lanvin a clear touchpoint. Additionally, there are clear elements from the Y2K-era of chunky, wide-bodied skate shoes that are still in fad today. From a brand strategy standpoint, the release of this new model makes total sense on both fronts. After minting a retro program for his basketball line just three shoes in, PUMA clearly considers Ball their signature athlete, and this only adds to that standing. From LaMelo’s side, he gets the chance to raise the profile of his own label, this lifestyle shoe possibly establishing precedent to make moves off-the-court as well.
The PUMA LaFrance Amour releases on May 17th. Take a look at official images just below to get familiar ahead of their debut.
