You’ve seen the clips on social media; women athletes dressed in what appears to be basketball uniforms doing everything you see in the game of women’s basketball, but without the dribbling and without a backboard. The game is called netball, and its roots are quite fascinating; it was founded by women’s sports teacher and pioneer Clara Gregory Baer, who misinterpreted the basketball rulebook in 1895. Today, it’s a sport played by over twenty million worldwide.
For its next collaboration with ASICS, Kiko Kostadinov looked towards sports around the net, and netball in particular. This direction is hardly new for the Kiko camp as they’ve regularly touched baseball, wrestling, and even horse-racing.
Designed by Womenswear Creative Directors Laura & Deanna Fanning, the ASICS GEL-Flammae utilizes the same FlyteFoam and GEL-cushioned midsole tooling seen in past projects like the GEL-Kiril. The upper features a more classic approach with the logo as the ASICS strikes sit in its customary position. A rubber toe-guard scoops up and hooks above the feet, fortifying the breathable mesh upper.
The Kiko Kostadinov x ASICS GEL-Flammae is currently expected to launch on July 12th, 2024 on the Kiko Kostadinov website, with a wider launch occurring at the selective network of Kiko retailers on July 19th.
