Nike Sportswear is commemorating the Air Force 1’s 30th anniversary in grand style, but there’s got to be another brand out there with at least one three-decades-old sneaker to celebrate. In the case of New Balance, it’s one that’s far from their regular rotation, though as soon as you see the style, it will instantly connect to the other similarly numbered models. That’s because 1982’s New Balance 990 was the inspiration for 991, 992 and 993, the first of those more recognizable numbers gaining notoriety in the past year-plus as late Apple founder Steve Jobs’ sneakers of choice. The 990 goes back even further, but has been updated to reflect the fine American craftsmanship that goes into each pair. These 0.5oz lighter 990s will be available in a wider range of colors coming up soon, with the classic grey coming out the gates first. via HC
