Tim Burton’s Batman Returns is a memorable super hero film for a number of reasons. While it’s debatable where Michael Keaton’s Batman portrayal ranks among the Bruce Wayne lineage, Danny DeVito’s the Penguin is as ridiculous a super villain as any and the overly stylized version of Gotham is the polar opposite of the more recent Dark Knight sagas. The movie is a pop culture classic, and even has a place in sneaker lore as Batman’s boot was molded from an Air Jordan 6. The film picked what was then the most modern athletic sneaker they could find, as Tinker Hatfield’s creation fit right in with the Gotham hero’s aesthetic. A rare look at the original sample shows a boot devoid of any Jumpman branding, but the panels, air bag, and overall silhouette remain noticeably unchanged – that is until you get to the knee high extension and all-black paint job.
