Before the adidas Superstar was ever mentioned in hip-hop lyrics, had collaborations with Prada, or even ranked as the best-selling sneaker in the U.S. (2016), it was the first full-leather, low-top basketball shoe. And as part of its 50th Anniversary, the shell-toe is commemorating its hoops heritage through colorways and mashups with other b-ball classics from adidas like the Rivalry, Forum, and Americana – seen here. While this forthcoming pair favors its signature construction from the 1970s, it features the Americana’s “Blue” and “Team College Red” scheme at the profile three stripes; the patriotic palette was fitting of the model’s 1974 debut given that the pair was worn by numerous players in the American Basketball Association. Though this Superstar foregoes any suede overlay at the toe like its partner in this hybrid retro, it does without typical trefoil branding at the tongue in favor of acknowledging this friendly encounter between two legends with text reading “AMERICANA VS SUPERSTAR” in the aforementioned blue/red arrangement. Lateral-side “SUPERSTAR” text migrates to the heel on this iteration and is done in a white, collegiate font.
