New Balance is ready to unleash another archive-inspired modern runner this year, and they’re tapping the tastes of Casablanca to deliver the first look to world. Officially revealed by Casablanca art director Steve Grimes, the New Balance XC-72 blends that vintage runner look with contemporary styling such as the enlarged logo placements, extended dimensions of the rubber soles, and a toe-box overlay – all similar elements seen in the celebrated New Balance 327. This isn’t much of a surprise; the XC-72 is designed by New Balance designer Charlotte Lee, who also led the creation of the 327.
Casablanca has draped its now-signature yellow and green palette on the silhouette, with cream white suede achieving that semi-vintage look. The shoes will be part of Casablanca’s “Grand Prix” premiere, scheduled for 5:30pm UK time, but there’s no question that the XC-72 will have a much larger role in 2021 in the form of collaborations and in-line releases.
