This New Balance 990v5 was initially reported as one of the brand’s propositions for Black History Month 2022. Since publishing this post, a source representing the brand has notified Sneaker News that the shoe isn’t tied to any official BHM effort. Confusingly, the sneaker’s product page includes the following description: ‘Designed by a team of Black NB associates, this special-edition Made in US 990v5 is a celebration of Black culture and the power that comes with sharing your experience.’ The pair’s ‘M990BH5’ style code also presumably calls to ‘B’lack ‘H’istory Month.
Despite some folks – namely Ye, the being formerly known as “Kanye West” – championing a “Black Future Month” movement, the month of February continues to be widely recognized as Black History Month within the United States of America. To kick off the 28-day celebration, some of the biggest players in the sneaker space have begun to release accompanying product. The latest?: A New Balance 990v5 clad in black and gold.
Reminiscent of other footwear produced for B.H.M., the newly-surfaced pair opts for a rather tonal, pitch-dark arrangement that allows for any contrasting hue to appear that much more prominently. In previous years, New Balance drew inspiration from the gospel choirs to which utmost reverence is given within the Black community, but its latest proposition abandons any purple and cream colors for a duo that speaks to Black excellence. Profile “N” logos, “990” branding at the lateral heel and tongue, and mesh underlays around the collar opt for a muted take on the aforementioned luxury finish, while the tried-and-proven ENCAP-cushioned sole unit surrenders the spotlight too.
