Nike’s Spring/Summer ’22 Collection Is A Blend Of Style, Function, And Sustainability

Nike’s Spring/Summer ’22 Collection Is A Blend Of Style, Function, And Sustainability

As more and more Nike offerings incorporate the circular design philosophy, that “Zero” they’ve been slowly moving towards comes closer and closer. And Spring/Summer ’22 marks the brand’s largest shift forward, as sustainability informs everything from Nike Sportswear to the historic Air Max line-up.

As Nike themselves states, they’re on a “journey to help the planet, and with it, the future of sport.” Thankfully, that doesn’t mean we’ll have to say goodbye to the Swoosh’s most beloved products, as popular collections and silhouettes — like the Tech Pack or the Air Max 97 — are simply being remade with sustainable materials. This makes it easier for the team at Beaverton to realize their ambitious 2025 targets, which entails reducing greenhouse gas emissions by half a million tons and diverting 100% waste out of landfills.

See below for details on what makes up Nike’s Spring/Summer ’22 collection. The apparel and footwear should be hitting select retailers and Nike.com throughout the season.

Footwear: Air Max, Classics, and the Newly Founded Sun Club

“If Nike Air was a standalone athletic company, based on revenue, it would be the third-largest in the world,” according to the brand. This makes both Nike Air and Air Max key players in realizing the Swoosh’s aforementioned targets. Beloved classics, such as the Air Max 90, 95, and 97, have been redesigned using both synthetic leather and recycled polyester, all without compromising what makes the shoes special in the first place. Alongside, the Air Max Dawn and Air Max Motif, two newer silhouettes, are joining the fray with at least 20% recycled content by weight.

Air Max isn’t the only line-up receiving a sustainable upgrade. Nike Classics, too, are leading the charge, and the Waffle, Blazer, and Dunk are right at the frontlines armed with recycled polyester, recycled synthetic leather, and Nike Grind rubber.

The Sun Club is one of the newest additions to the battalion. Defined by its recycled textiles, synthetic suede, and playful spirit, the pack will deliver vibrant renditions of the Dunk Low, Air Max Pre-Day, Blazer Low, Air Force 1, and Court Vision Lo.

Three pillars make up the Spring/Summer ’22 apparel collection.

Nike Sportswear will feature all the styles you’re familiar with and then some, many of which are made of canvas, fleece, and rain jacket materials derived from manufacturing waste. Everyday pants and technical outerwear are rife across what’s available, and even the iconic Windrunner jacket makes a return in 75% recycled TPU.

Nike Tech Pack, though sustainable all the same, delivers a range of everyday garments. Woven pants, overalls, and even an EcoDown vest are among what’s upcoming, all constructed out of either recycled polyester, nylon, or organic cotton fibers.

Finally, Nike Pro caters to professional and amateur athletes alike. And as the Nike Pro shorts and tights sold over 7 million units in 2021, it’s only appropriate that the collection see a change. Now, most options are made with at least 50% recycled polyester.
