John Kim It’s fun to get nostalgic about Nike ACG, and somewhere down the line, the Mountain Fly will be fondly remembered as one of the sub-divisions best designs. One of Nathan Van Hook’s final hurrah’s before moving on to design for Moncler, the ACG Mountain Fly is finally poised for a sequel – the ACG Mountain Fly Low 2.
While some of the design language carries over, the Mountain Fly Low 2 is essentially a brand new sneaker. The asymmetrical toe is re-centered, a standard tongue is added to replace the bootie construction, the lacing apparatus reverts to a non-wide set-up, the ankle height is slightly lowered, and lining around the heel is a bit thicker. It’s set to operate like a traditional sneaker, with a grippy outsole made with 045 HAGR RUBBER (the predecessor utilized 068 HAGR RUBBER).
While the original utilized a REACT + FLYPLATE cushioning system, there is no such marking on the Mountain Fly Low 2. By no means does this signify a lack of the mentioned, but if so, it would be alarming if the MSRP remains at $180.
If the Mountain Fly Low 2 comes in at a lower price-point with Gore-Tex trims down the line (like the ACG Mountain Fly Mid 2), it’s work giving a shot on the trails. Otherwise, the original model still looks better as the ACG branding on these are bordering on obscene. Do we really need seven ACG call-outs on the exterior, especially with billboarded manner on the lateral?
