Nike recently unveiled the Vaporfly 3 ahead of the year’s racing season.
The running sneaker is a visual departure from the ZoomX Vaporfly NEXT% 2, a fan-favorite racing shoe that debuted in January 2021. Flypate and ZoomX components, however, deliver tried-and-tested performance to the third Vaporfly silhouette. Nike’s most resilient foam receives a geometric reduction to help stabilize runners’ transitions. Furthermore, the chiseled midsole delivers improved energy return; lightweight Flyknit yarn – not woven mesh – covers the upper.
Launch styles of the ZoomX Vaporfly 3 deliver a mix of colors for all running shoe preferences. The model’s “Prototype” look nods to the sneaker’s development process: the number “57” on the midsole calls out the number of Flyknit upper iterations tested by the team, while a wear-tester’s identification number (20126-23) also lands on the ZoomX cushioning. Lastly, the drop-Swoosh pays homage to the original Vaporfly worn by Eliud Kipchoge, Lelisa Desisa and Zersenay Tadese at a Breaking 2 test event in 2017.
According to Nike, the Vaporfly 3 weighs 198g (6.9 oz) for a US Men’s Size 10 (165g (5.8 oz), Women’s 8). The heel-to-forefoot offset is 8mm with the stack height arriving at over 40mm. Furthermore, the rubber traction underneath the forefoot has been reportedly shaved down 2mm. Wear-testers, however, haven’t reported durability issues with the change.
The Vaporfly 3 debuts in the “Prototype” style via nike.com on Monday, March 6. The shoe is priced at $250 USD and will arrive for both men and women.
