The timeless nature of Nike footwear from the 1980s an 1990s is a double-edged sword. On one hand, the Swoosh has managed to create such beautiful footwork that has high appeal decades later. On the other, their modern design work hasn’t been able to compete with the past.
It truly is all about the Retro business for Nike, and this upcoming Air Force 1 Low “Timeless” highlights the impact that these now-ancient creations have had over the years. While keeping to the standard construction, Nike adds some funky color-blocking touches on the heel to mimic the quarter panel of the Air Max 1, while the white/black outsole also copies the non-uniform nature of the ’87 design. Even the materials tell the story as the base sport mesh and suede synthetic match up with the Air Max 1.
The execution of this release is rather timely given the recent 40th Anniversary of the AF-1 and the current 35th Anniversary of the Air Max 1. And with Nike going back to the “big bubble” roots of the latter model, the fanfare around the original Air Max model is as high as its ever been.
A firm release date has yet to be revealed, so stay tuned for updates.
